I helped Gatsby in the pursuit of
his dream, because it seemed pure and unmarred by any baser instincts or
motives. I’ve seen the destruction money plays on couple’s first-hand. Tom’s
relationship with Daisy seems to repulse me. I want to see Daisy (my cousin) in
real love. I don’t want her to stay with somebody for the money. I want her to
have a happy life, doing what she loves with who she actually loves. I care
about what the love of Gatsby for Daisy stands for - something authentic in an
inauthentic world. I don’t really care what happens between Daisy and Tom. I’m
focused on making Jay’s dream (being together with Daisy) a reality. Gatsby's
dream is more real to me than even the realities of my life. I feel that the
best relationships are rooted in friendship. Gatsby trusted me and respected me
as his neighbor. When he passed away, I was devastated. At his funeral, I was
one of the very few people to attend. This showed that people only cared for
his wealth and parties. Not many people actually talked to him and understood
his dreams in life. He trusted me with almost everything. After his death I even contacted his friends,
business partners, and family members, and made the funeral arrangements
because no one else cared to do so. I just wish he would’ve been with Daisy. I
wish he would’ve accomplished the only thing that mattered in his life.

What I was thinking when Tom took me to see Myrtle
As Tom and I were riding the train
into the city, Tom forced me to follow him out of the train at one of these
stops. Tom led me to George Wilson’s garage, which sits on the edge of the
valley of ashes. Tom’s lover Myrtle is Wilson’s wife. Wilson looked like a lifeless man,
colored gray by the ashes in the air. In contrast, Myrtle had a kind of energy.
She striked me as sensuous despite her stocky figure. Tom taunted Wilson and
then ordered Myrtle to follow him to the train. I was pretty sure at the time
that this was the girl Tom was cheating on Daisy with. I knew Tom wasn’t the
guy for Daisy, but she (and her parents) chose him for his money. George seemed
pretty clueless and inattentive to the fact that Tom was having an affair with
his wife. After the stop, Tom took me and Myrtle to New York City, to the Morningside Heights
apartment (for his affair). We had an impromptu party with Myrtle’s sister,
Catherine, and a couple named McKee. Tom was forcing me to talk to Myrtles
sister, Catherine. That night was only the second time I got drunk. It was a
crazy night in New York. Tom got too drunk though. He swung and broke Myrtles
nose after an argument. I thought to myself that I had to get out of there
before things got more out of hand. I somehow caught the train to Long Island
at 4 A.M with Mr. McKee. I didn’t like to be around Tom. I wasn’t really a fan
of the things he did.
What I was feeling when I went to my first party at Jay Gatsby's mansion
When I first moved to West Egg, I
used to always see a man next door but I never knew who he was. I heard rumors
about a man named Jay Gatsby, so I assumed it was him. I heard he threw huge
parties about every weekend. One day, Gatsby’s chauffeur brought me an
invitation to one of these parties. I was thrilled and could not wait to see
how big these parties actually were. At the appointed time, I made the short
walk to Gatsby’s house and joined the festivities, feeling somewhat out of
place amid the throng of jubilant strangers. People at the party were spreading
rumors of Gatsby’s wealth and personal history. The rumors ranged from a German
spy in World War 1 to a graduate of Oxford who killed a man in cold blood. I
didn’t know what to believe at the time. Jordan and I set off to find this
mysterious Jay Gatsby in search of the truth. We ran into a middle-aged man
with huge, owl-eyed spectacles (whom I called Owl Eyes) who sat poring over the
unread books in Gatsby’s library. It was kind of weird seeing a man alone in
his library but we carried on. At midnight, Jordan
and I went outside to watch the entertainment. We sat at a table with a handsome
young man who says that I looked familiar to him; we realized that I served in
the same division during the war. It turns out it was Jay Gatsby. I felt
thrilled to finally meet him and discover the real truth about him. It turns
out he was a really kind man who was in pursuit of something.
What I was feeling when Jordan told me about Jay's past with Daisy
After the lunch in New York with
Jay, I saw Jordan, who finally told me the details or her mysterious
conversation with Jay. She told me that Jay Gatsby was in love with my cousin,
Daisy Buchanan. According to Jordan, during the war, before Daisy married Tom,
Daisy was a beautiful young girl in Louisville, Kentucky, and all the military
officers in town were in love with her. Daisy fell in love with Lieutenant Jay
Gatsby, who was stationed at the base near her home. I felt that their
relationship was real unlike hers with Tom. She also told me that Gatsby bought
his house in West Egg to just be near Daisy who lives in East Egg. I remembered
the night I saw Gatsby stretching his arms out to the water and realized that
the green light he saw was the light at the end of Daisy’s dock. According to
Jordan, Gatsby asked her to convince me to arrange a reunion between Gatsby and
Daisy. Because he is terrified that Daisy will refuse to see him, Gatsby wants
me to invite Daisy to tea. I was feeling a little bit nervous about his plan.
In my mind I decided to do this favor for him because I saw signs of true love
between the two of them. I felt that Gatsby was very lovesick. The green light,
in Gatsby’s mind, is a symbol of hope. He hopes to be together with her in the
future. I would like to see my cousin with a better man than Tom.

What I was thinking when Gatsby wanted to talk with Daisy
After my date with Jordan, I oddly
saw Gatsby’s mansion lit up very brightly. It looked unoccupied and I was a
little bit confused of what was going on. All of a sudden, Gatsby came across
the lawn and surprised me. He seemed a little agitated and desperate to make me
happy. I assumed that he was trying to kiss up to me because he wanted me to
follow through with the plan of inviting Daisy to my house for tea. He was
going to walk in when she was there. I was going to agree with his plan even if
he didn’t kiss up to me. Immediately when I followed through with the plan, he
offered me to get someone to cut my grass. He also offered me the chance to
make some money by joining him in some business he does on the side—business
that does not involve Meyer Wolfshiem. I was slightly offended that Gatsby
wanted to pay me for arranging the meeting with Daisy but I still agreed to call
Daisy and invite her to my house. Gatsby was nervous because it was raining on
the day of the arrangement. When I brought her into the house, I saw that
Gatsby had suddenly disappeared. There was a knock at the door. Gatsby entered,
after walking around my house in the rain. Gatsby knocked my clock over because
he was so nervous, but I didn’t get mad. It was a weird meeting at first but
after I left them together, the meeting turned into a great time for the two of
them.

Why I moved to the east (west egg)
I
moved to the east to start a new job in the stock market. I wanted to
experience a new lifestyle after the war. The Midwest is different. I like to
be in the big city around trees and tall buildings. The Middle West seems like
the edge of the universe now. My parents don’t like that I’m moving so far, but
they agreed to help finance me for a year. It’ll get a little weird waking up
and sleeping in such a rowdy city. I chose the bond business because it is the
most popular of them all. I wanted to live close to work but a young man at my
work said that we should take a house together in a commuting town (West Egg).
I ended up meeting a fine young name that goes by the name of Jay Gatsby. He
went by the name of James Gats in the war. He was in my regiment during the war,
but I guess I never met him face-to-face. He’s a very nice neighbor who likes
to throw some great, classy parties. Anyways, I find it a little weird that the
young man never showed up to the house that we were supposed to live in
together. Apparently, he found a new job somewhere else. So right now I’m
living in this bungalow alone. Everyone who lives in the Eggs are filthy rich.
I’ve made a decent amount of friends here already. My cousin, Daisy Buchanan,
moved with her husband Tom to East Egg. I’ve hung out with them and had some
good times.
